ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"Equilibrium" is a striking art installation that weaves a narrative of the often-overlooked significance of wasps in the delicate balance of our ecosystem. Comprising of 50 unique and meticulously handcrafted wasps, this visceral piece invites viewers to contemplate the intricate harmony that exists within the natural world. These insects, often misunderstood and feared, silently fulfil their role in safeguarding our ecosystem and securing our collective future. Their protection, invasion, or even extinction hinges on the fragile equilibrium of their surroundings, serving as a stark reminder of the consequences of disrupting nature's balance. The form and size of the "Equilibrium" installation is deliberately left open to interpretation, allowing for endless possibilities in presentation. Each of the wasps can be thoughtfully placed, creating a unique composition adapting to the space. As a gentle breeze sweeps through the installation, the wings of these wasps respond with graceful, rhythmic movements, enhancing the sense of life within the art piece. The wasps have metal pins from two legs allowing them to be placed on any drillable surface, giving the illusion of being weightlessly attached. A drill bit is included to assist with the installation as well as instructions. Previously shown at the Other Art Fair, London and Insect Odyssey Exhibition, Salisbury Museum, UK. Please contact me if you'd like me to install these and for an additonal fee.

Rhea Thierstein is an international British Artist whose work explores our connections with nature, drawing attention to the pivotal significance of tiny moments which surround us, creating new experiences for her audiences. Unique application of everyday materials takes their boundaries to different levels, with the use of narrative to stimulate nostalgic responses. With delicacy, beauty and often a surprisingly dark undertone Rhea’s work has been seen on a multitude of platforms crossing over to art, installations, moving image, stills photography, costume and immersive theatre. Rhea was born in Germany, but grew up in the South of England. She loved to explore microworlds in her environment. Magnifying tiny moments is a continuing theme in her work. Rhea contributed work to an all female group show for Saatchi and Saatchi (London) and was commissioned to create an art installation at the Natural History Museum (London) for its Venom exhibition. She was also chosen by Hermès to be featured in their Artist Windows in the UK, Ireland and Dubai on a number occasions and was named as one of London’s 10 fastest-rising creatives by The Business of Fashion. By virtue of her reputation, Rhea was subsequently offered the task of Creative Practitioner for Performance, School of Media and Communication at The London College of Fashion (University of the Arts) in 2014 for two-and-a-half years.
