As an artist Hayley-Jays' main focus is on the creation of figuratively based ceramic sculptures. Her artworks explore the complexities and variants of gender identity, through expressions of gesture, posture and movement. Symbolic images of protective armour, clothing and the use of multiple layers highlight the ways in which as human beings, we hide layers of our identity, gender and core self, and yet leave resonances, fragmented elements, behind us as we journey through life. These artworks are created in both porcelain and stoneware paperclay. The combined use of these materials enable the creation of larger artworks constructed using thin layers of clay. This sculpture is created referencing historic genres, but is an artwork that engages the viewer (voyeur) in a contemporary way, to question what is before them. Male or Female? Neither? Metal or Porcelain? The hidden, the partial become the significant. All of Hayley-Jay's sculptures are created from hand-building techniques and free form sculpting.

Born and educated in the UK, a passionate artist since a child, I initially trained as an Interior Designer. After a successful career, I retrained in ceramics completing 7 years full time study at the Universities of Bristol and Cardiff. As an artist my main focus is on the creation of figuratively based ceramic sculptures. My artworks explore the complexities and variants of gender identity, through the expressions of gesture, posture and movement. Symbolic images of protective armour, clothing and the use of multiple layers are often central to many of my artworks. My artworks are created in both porcelain and stoneware paperclay. The combined use of these materials enable the creation of larger artworks that are constructed using thin layers of clay. I mainly use hand-building and free form sculpting techniques. I work from my studios in the South West of France. My artworks have been exhibited widely, and they are in collections throughout the UK, USA, Holland, Germany and within France.
