About The Artwork

This diorama was inspired by the film "Fargo" directed by the Coen Brothers in 1996 and starring in miniature Peter Stormare and Steve Buscemi's foot. This shadowbox is part of Lisa Swerling's "Cinerama" collection, a series depicting iconic scenes from beloved big screen classics. The ever-growing collection is shown annually in at MiXX gallery, Telluride, Colorado to coincide with the Telluride Film Festival. Scale: HO 1:87 The figures are hand-painted, and not much bigger than pea-height. Interior of box is sparkling white glitter. Hanging: "Glass Cathedral" diorama can nestle in a shelf, or easily hang on a french cleat (provided) on a wall. Lisa Swerling’s Glass Cathedrals are a series of hundreds of miniature worlds in boxes, made over the last twenty years in Cape Town, California and London and each one containing a sparkling parallel world reflecting the poignancy, absurdity and beauty of our own. Lisa is best is known for her three-dimensional custom portraits in boxes, where she recreates people and scenes in miniature dioramas. Born in Cape Town, Lisa moved to London as a teenager. She studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University (1991-4), followed by Art at Central St. Martins (1995). Lisa lived in California from 2010-22 with her daughters and artist husband Ralph Lazar, and is now based in London, making regular pilgrimages to Southern Africa. The ideas behind Glass Cathedrals are based on thoughts Lisa has had since she was a child: “Why does glitter feel more precious to me than gold? I’m scared to jump in the water so why do I jump anyway? How can I feel so important and insignificant at the same time?” Within the boxes such apparent contradictions intersect – fear and bravery, infinity and intimacy, meaning and insignificance. When we take a moment to look at the tiny figures, we see our own lives in miniature proportions. The recognition of our shared humanity can make the path that much easier to travel.
