Brian Andrews is a sculptor who works with wood, employing traditional techniques to explore contemporary cultural issues, including ideas of self and of man's place within the landscape. Born in rural Vermont, Andrews worked as a cabinet maker before attending Marlboro College in Marlboro, VT. There, he studied both art and systems of writing, culminating in a senior thesis that explored cognitive linguistics through the lens of graphic design and typography. This project included a series of hand-carved ampersands. In 2002, he moved to San Francisco, where the vibrant art scene inspired his return to sculpture. His work is informed by an ongoing interest in cultural meanings and traditions as well as by his work as a graphic designer, a practice that is evident in his work's esthetic sensibility. Andrews' work has been included in group shows in the Bay Area and nationally. Recent awards include Best of Show in the Sebastopol Center for the Arts' Mapworks: The Map as Art exhibition and 2nd prize in the Brea Gallery's 26th annual Made in California Juried Exhibition.
