"Fortitude" - Wandering Albatross (life-size) Sculpture

Limited edition of 5 casts. The true magnificence of the albatrosses is their vast wingspans the wandering albatross (Diomedea exulans) has the largest of any living bird. As I set about this project, I realised to bring this piece to life I needed to recreate the species’ mastery of fl ight. To attempt this I chose have the entire bird suspended by one wingtip, thereby posing a series of engineering challenges: the base must support the angle on a cantilever effect. Accurate calculations were required to prevent the piece falling towards tail or beak. The wings are made of around one thousand individually handcrafted feathers. • Weight-160kg of pure bronze • Wingspan:3,6 metres (a full grown male) • Angle: 46° to 50° • Height of the sculpture: 2,5 metres • The base (also pure bronze) is triangular measuring around 1,3 metres in width and 1,7 metres long.
