Harriet Tubman began life as a slave. She escaped and then amazingly returned repeatedly to the South risking everything to first help her own family and then maybe 300 others escape. She served the Union Army as an intelligence operative and then lived briefly in Canada. Her courage alone earns her a place in American history and in the mythology of those greater than a confronting terror. Responding to a call for art featuring saints, I created one in the Eastern Orthodoxy Icon mode. I painted Harriet from a photo image in acrylic on a birch art board, gave her the traditional halo, composed the work in the traditional arched form, and mounted it on a rough 3/4 inch black walnut panel.
