Amman-based Iraqi artist Mudar Al-Rawi’s work is multifaceted, spanning paintings, sculptures and wall hangings that seek to portray a collective human experience of hardship, daily life burdens, injustices, and the struggle for power. In his work, Al-Rawi visualizes curious and extraordinary states of mind, painting emotions and sculpting mindsets with which his audience can relate, while allowing spontaneity to result in liberated forms. Relying on bold colors, mixed textures and materials, Al-Rawi tries to exemplify the diversity of ways in which humans cope to survive and withstand turmoil. His approach is inspired by his sense of detachment from his original homeland and his search for meaning and identity, as he adapted to life in exile with an open mind. He sees conflict as lying beyond ideological lines and political discourse. By displacing human bodies from their rigid state, Al-Rawi’s work is ultimately a reflection of human resilience, liberation and healing that draws on peace as a way to persevere and flourish. Al-Rawi was Born in the UK in 1980 to Iraqi parents before moving to Amman, Jordan in 1983 where he grew up. He went to university in Toronto, Canada to study business management, before settling down in Jordan once again in 2003 to work in his family business.
