About The Artwork

Inspired by my brother Glenn's mosaic work and his Stilt Houses, I got the idea for this larger piece while working on my Elevated Memory Series. In spiritual terms, to me Higher Ground represents that which is most sacred. My Elevated Memory structures range in height from 16 - 24 inches. In this case I increased the height to 40+ inches. This elevates the work to being a stand-alone piece. I've chosen an arts and craft style of construction because it's intricacy relates best to the sacredness of the piece. The work is made of Cherry and Purple Heart, hand sanded to the finest grit and completed with five coats of hand rubbed oil finish. My hope is that the piece be used for ones fondest memories. The ones that express what is most near and dear to you.

I am a sculptor, woodworker, photographer, raised in Rochester, New York and currently living and working in Prescott, Arizona. My path has taken me in many directions. Years ago I was seriously wounded in Viet Nam. The injuries were many but more importantly I lost much of the use of my left (primary) hand and the sight of one eye. This event forced me to adapt and focus more keenly on my surroundings, my direction, and defining who I am as a person. I received a degree in Studio Art at SUNY Brockport and while there, I studied sculpture and furniture design with renowned sculptors, Wendell Castle and Albert Paley. At that time I also began my photographic experience and realized I had a knack in all media for looking beyond the big picture and focusing on life's minute details. I received a Masters Degree in Art Education from Nazareth College and I worked as an art teacher both in NY and Arizona for close to 25 years. Through my work and my teaching I've tried to convey an appreciation of the joys of life, whether through art or the simple act of helping others. Artistically my path has taken me in many directions. Creating photography and furniture with a focus on the sculptural beauty in both, I continue to get closer and to see what others might not.
