About The Artwork

Living a life that is almost nomadic in nature and rich with experiences also reminds me of my solitude. I distilled all those agonies into my artworks. They are also a time machine to recreate time lost and the reminder of sacrifices I had to endure. I weave those experiences like a tapestry and recreate those personal experiences. I use materials that are part of my existence and physical self. I use my own hair as a thread to stitch baby dresses, adult attires or blankets to give them an intimate touch. Embroidery is deeply rooted in the tradition of Bangladesh. Intending to deconstruct its power of narration I have introduced fabric with embroidery into my art, but instead of the thread, I began to use my hair, and I have also started to use my fingerprints as a drawing tool. I used all these elements to search for my identity and create an unbreakable bridge of ownership with an inseparable part of me. For me, the needle symbolises a healer, used to create the bond and my hair, dead yet constantly growing hair, expresses the eternal cycle of life imbibed with love and promise. The moments we define as our life in a continuum of time become significant as we weave our love around the people we care about and how we communicate our stories and make the fabric of life. For all intents and purposes, my art, as well as the process, is autobiographical in its nature. It is also like a soliloquy, a stream of consciousness that conveys the dialogues I want to share. Like a migratory bird, though I have crossed many geographical boundaries flying with my dream, like a kite, I also feel the tug of my roots. In this relentless struggle, I seek my own identity.

I am a Bangladeshi-born British interdisciplinary visual artist living and working in Canada. I organised many solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions in different countries. My work is autobiographical in nature. I use the unique signature of my body to explore my identity in time and place. I use my hair as a thread and my fingertips as brushes during this process. I imprint my emotions on different surfaces to express the inimitable chaos of my inner and outer worlds.
