"Icon" is part of my life-long theme of "Beauty Within". In this case I am showing beauty on the outside only. This is meant to be a portrait of Marilyn Monroe, who was beautiful outside, but very disturbed inside. Marilyn is described here as a pretty mask, which hides her tortured soul. Her eyes are closed because she is no longer with us, but at peace. If you look at some of my other work, you will see masks in stone, though attractive, they are meant to represent the beauty within all of us, no matter what we look like on the outside. My first stone sculpture in this series is of an ugly facemask sliding off of the beautiful soul within. I have struggled with this issue my whole life, always looking for that beautiful woman, and ending up alone. This sculpture is made of Indiana limestone, which is not too difficult to carve. Limestone can later turn in to marble, with enough heat and pressure from the earth. She also weighs about 1,500 pounds and is pinned to the base. The photo here is "Icon", on loan, in front of the Ventura County Government Center. This can be shipped anywhere in the world, and will withstand any weather for hundreds of years, if not thousands! "Icon" now resides at Art City in Ventura, along with many of my other stone sculptures. Please contact me if you have any questions at: Thanks for looking! Gordon

For over fifty years I have been drawing the human figure and continually find it challenging. Drawing from a live model is the primary method I use. Sometimes in as little as thirty seconds I try to capture the illusive movement of dance, a gesture of emotion, or a sensual moment. I also love sculpture, drawing and photography, and have made my living at it for 40 years. I will be 75 years old in January of 2022, and I have no signs of slowing down! :)
