About The Artwork

The work was created after researching the communities who lived in the 1800s in Rockville Maryland. The subject matter is a woman in disguise and in transit in order to escape from her slave owner. The materials are heavy satin (fabric) and wire mesh copper textile. The form (Plaster of Paris) is mounted on the wall by means of a twig or branch like structure alluding to the outside world. Techniques in creating structure or any form of art is important in executing the artwork. In this image the fabric is creased and stitched to form folds to give the 3D relief form.
