ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This intricately carved paper sculpture is my monochromatic view of a brightly colored blanket, relying solely on the dramatic design hand-cut deeply through layers of paper to create dramatic shadows. The design suggests Native American themes in an abstract southwestern motif. The medium is thick, textured archival paper separated by archival museum board. Museum glass is anti-reflective so you see the design, not the glare.

William Freer is a New Mexico artist whose work resonates with collectors nationwide. In his gallery and commissioned work, Bill focuses on the drama of lights and darks, creating pure designs that convey the power of the shadow. Re-imagining scenes from nature, from native symbols, from architectural details and art motifs, he carves through layers of paper or steel, always allowing the shadows to tell the story. As light shifts throughout the day, new moods emerge adding subtle movement. His paper sculpture is an oasis of calm and precision, a place of contemplation to collectors. And his steel work is the yang to paper’s yin, where collectors feel the voice of energy, strength and power. Drama springs from many joined layers that make shadows deep and alluring, while rich patinas, a colorful splash of glass and 360-degree rotation add surprise and excitement. He’s happiest when viewers touch and turn his work, feeling its surfaces, experiencing its spirit. With a keen understanding of both the public and private space, his works in paper and in steel appear in individual, corporate and public collections nationwide. He also partners with celebrated public artist Howard Meehan. Bill's recent public art installation (a kinetic work in steel and glass) was purchased by Western New Mexico University. A multi-media artist, Bill is equally at home with computer design programs, CNC equipment and a hammer.
