ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Vintage juice pitcher, deviled egg tray, fly swatters, spark plugs, gooseneck spout from a vintage oil can, food strainer, metal strapping, vintage phone handset pieces, vintage apple corer, thermometer. Jeremiah was born in the Netherlands and grew up in Gatlinburg TN, spending much of his youth exploring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. His parents, Beatrix and Buzz, met when they were both students at Georgia Tech. Buzz loved football, but was too small to play, so he became the team mascot. Jeremiah is also the great-nephew of a famous actress, who starred in The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry RFD, playing “Aunt Bee” (after whom Beatrix was named). Jeremiah attended Embry-Riddle and majored in Aeronautics, with a minor in Apiculture. While in school, he earned the nickname “The Flying Dutchman” based on his heritage and daring flight maneuvers. He went on to fly for the Yellow Angels, and discovered Martha’s Vineyard while stationed at Otis Air Force Base. He soon came to love the Island and all its special places. He moved to MV full time after the Air Force and now gives tourists thrilling trick flights in his bright red biplane, and also serves as the CPO (Chief Pollination Officer) for the Island Bee Company. His ‘guilty pleasure’ is a lunch of Nancy’s clam strips, onion rings, and a Bad Martha’s Honey Double IPA.

David Joseph is an artist, physician, engineer and inventor who lives on Martha’s Vineyard and in Naples, Florida. As an artist, David’s primary media are found object art and photography. An avid international traveler, he has visited over 120 countries on all seven continents, all 50 states, and over 250 UNESCO world heritage sites, each destination an opportunity to photograph nature, wildlife, and portraits. Unable to travel during Covid, David saw the potential to create art from the mundanity around him. He began to create found object sculptures made of old or used common household items, toys, and sports equipment. Each whimsical, thought-provoking piece displays the balanced composition of a trained artist and the skilled construction of an engineer.
