Sculpture, Wood on Wood

Ships in a Crate
About the Sculpture: This slice of rough lead wood is carved with two hands. The top and is the hand of Christ with a nail through the palm. This represents the work that Christ has done for us on the cross. The bottom hand is pointing towards the top hand. The Bottom hand is saying: 'Look at the Price'. If you look at my other work you will see that I am always teaching people about the work of the Cross. Jesus Christ came to save us from our lower emotions by giving us a way to enter into the presence of God Almighty. We can also die the same spiritual death which Jesus died for us on the cross and therefore also 'rise' and share in His resurrection. This piece can be wall mounted. About the Wood: It is carved from Lead wood (Ebony) which is a very hard wood indigenous to South Africa. A Lead Wood tree can grow for a 1000 years and then can stand dead in the ground for another 1000 years. If a dead lead wood tree were to be buried underneath the ground for the same period of time it would turn into fossil and is the equivalent of rock. As a wood carver I know that I can not carve a green or wet tree. It will crack and split into pieces. I used to go and find the old dead trees in the mountain and then I would still have to let them dry in the sun for a few years before I could carve them. Now a days you can not drive into the mountain any more and finding reasonable sized dead trees is very hard because people cut them down for fire wood. Hard indigenous woods are becoming rare, especially the big ones. I have accumulated wet trees over the years, which I keep and I turn them in the sun every year, this particular piece of wood I have sun dried for 30 years. The wood itself is very valuable. You might think the price is high but actually you are only paying for the worth of the wood not my time or skills.
