About The Artwork

‘Looking Forward’ takes the simple form of box periscopes used by soldiers from both side in the trenches, to view forward into no mans land. Eleven elements reduced in stages to outlines, with their shadows, reference the date of the armistice. . The linear suggestions of the periscopes both literally and metaphorically look forwards, to a more hopeful future and reflect on aspects of the 1st world war, They have been used as a vehicle for bringing together a number of details from documents including, trench maps, newspaper headlines, poetry and the word 'peace' handwritten in a number of different languages. These have been collaged through etching and enamelling to create panels around the structures.
