Love VS Hate Sculpture

About the Sculpture: This Sculpture depicts a cruel, hateful fist at the top with a contrasting open soft hand at the bottom. I believe all people were born with the ability to be good and bad. We choose which emotions we want to use. I also teach people how to be saved from their lower dark emotions and my art depicts that. You can have a look at my website for more about me. TheShoe.org About the Wood: It is carved from Lead wood (Ebony) which is a very hard wood indigenous to South Africa, mounted on a slice of Lead wood. A Lead Wood tree can grow for a 1000 years and then can stand dead in the ground for another 1000 years. If a dead lead wood tree were to be buried underneath the ground for the same period of time it would turn into fossil and is the equivalent of rock. As a wood carver I know that I can not carve a green or wet tree. It will crack and split into pieces. I used to go and find the old dead trees in the mountain and then I would still have to let them dry in the sun for a few years before I could carve them. Now a days you can not drive into the mountain any more and finding reasonable sized dead trees is very hard because people cut them down for fire wood. Hard indigenous woods are becoming rare, especially the big ones. I have accumulated wet trees over the years, which I keep and I turn them in the sun every year, this particular piece of wood I have sun dried for 30 years. The wood itself is very valuable. You might think the price is high but actually you are only paying for the worth of the wood not my time or skills.
