ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Lute is one of the mediation totem series. Its oval shape was inspired by Tantric paintings, which are designed to awaken heightened states of consciousness. The central floating boat serves as a visual anchor and meditation focal point. The lute instrument itself is a fitting emblem of transience. It is physically fragile and is played in an improvisational style. To the same degree, this assemblage serves as a reliquary of balance and calm. My assemblages come out of the post-minimalist tradition, which this piece in particular exemplifies. It holds nothing in excess, and lacks nothing; yet is tempered by organic, harmonious elements.
