Yes, what is this again, you might ask. A sculpture ... but not just a sculpture. In 2007 Damien Hirst made his skull with diamonds ... for 10 million. It is now, I believe, for sale for 100 million! My senior lecturer once told me that if you have an idea, there is always someone in the world who has the same kind of idea. I made this "sculpture" in ... Exactly yes; 2007. I don't even know why anymore, but it took me months before it was finished ... and then Damien came up with ... Well, yes, you know that story. No, these are not diamonds, and it is also not worth 100 million ... that of Damien by the way ... I think! Is this kitch, art? For me it's art. It depicts the relationship between people who often look very good and simple on the outside, but is that always true? Are the relationships what they seem to be? A man with his friend's head under his arm. Did he take the head off or ...? And that heart in his hand? (Not visible in the photo but what does it mean?) What does that mean? Does this have to do with racial discrimination? With love .. forever? It is made of a child's mannequin that stood in my studio for years. It was always in the way, but I couldn't throw it away. The pearls and rhinestones are from my career as a stylist for the famous Dutch people. Many people came with an earring or a necklace, I had enough ... as you can see. The "hairs" are open-cut edges that we used to make black pete collars back then (currently black pete, a historical figure in dutch history, is the subject of discussion. Maybe I already had a visionary back then , because it would now be a wonderful example of how "black pete" is being dealt with right now, right up to court cases! People for and against, it would be discriminatory and "black fellow man" a making nonsense Nonsense, it was and was just a fairytale figure, but adults have now taken it seriously! So now there is a kind of "black pete" war in the Netherlands ... and I think they never come out. clarity: this image is never meant to be racist ... that you know! Well I admit it, a strange piece of art, but it still intrigues me, even after 12 years.

Welcome to PaulsArtWorld on Saatchi, the vibrant world of Paul Harmsen, a versatile Dutch artist who paints, creates captivating videos, and designs unique artwear, gaywear, menswear. Born in Doetinchem, Netherlands, Paul's artistic journey took a transformative turn when he transitioned from a successful hairdressing career to pursue his passion at the Gerrit Rietveld art academy in Amsterdam. With a background in costume design for television and theater, Paul's artistic spirit was temporarily overshadowed. However, a bold decision to sell his house and business, along with a move to France, reignited his artistic flame. Operating an art studio/gallery alongside a bed and breakfast, his work organically found its way into the hearts and homes of admirers. In 2018, Paul and his husband moved to Aix en Provence, and despite facing the challenges of the Covid era, Paul embraced new artistic endeavors. His relocation to Spain in 2002, marked the inception of "Paulsartworld," a pioneering fashion company specializing in menswear adorned with prints inspired by his eclectic artworks. Discover Paul's videos on YouTube @paulsnewartworld, showcasing his dynamic artistic process. As a self-proclaimed maverick, Paul refuses to be confined to a specific style or category, making it a challenge to label his work as purely art, kitsch, or fashion. Embracing diversity in materials and techniques, Paul creates a harmonious fusion of painting, drawing, modeling, sewing, and more.
