ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The sculptures are inspired by Paleolithic cave paintings in which animals are depicted with enormous muscle masses and thin limbs. Despite the non-naturalistic representation, the animals remain perfectly recognizable as if this alteration of shapes preserves their "soul", if one exists. Roberto Barbuti returns to this representation, making it three-dimensional and, in turn, preserving the soul of the animals he creates and enhancing it by highlighting the characteristics of the various species. The animals are made of painted terracotta, modeled using the “colombino” technique which allows only the external wall of the statues to be built, leaving them empty inside.
