Art Description

Sculpture: Fiber, Clay on Plastic.

My “Nut Heads” sculpture symbolically represents gestation and birth, but in the context of a surreal dream-like fantasy creation. As a hybrid of human and plant, human baby heads become the nuts inside of a peanut shell, commenting on genetic experimentation, with human genes combined with other living organisms. They also remind some of the Sci-fi Pod People movies from the 1970’s. However, they symbolically represent the passage of time for a plant (or baby) to fully form and then be born, when the pod opens to reveal the nut heads. They also represent the hatching of ideas, and creations from those ideas, which take time to develop and then be realized. The “Nut Heads” are like something that one might encounter in a dream - strange and out of place. On another level, they indicate that humans, like plants, are part of natures’ creation and that we are more alike than different. Plants and Humans contain similar cell structures and immune systems.
