IAN PALMER paintings / collages / sculptures. Ian Palmer creates large-format abstract canvases that explores the space where gesture, atmosphere, and memory converge, using scale as a means to immerse viewers in fields of shifting color and movement. Each painting unfolds through layers of sweeping strokes, delicate scratches, and unexpected bursts of energy, inviting viewers to experience the tension between stillness and motion. Palmer approaches the canvas as an open terrain—one that holds both structure and spontaneity. His luminous color fields that seem to breathe, dynamic rhythms created through drips, splatters, and fluid lines. He embraces the expressive power of handwriting-like gestures and the evocative presence of marks that feel both intimate and expansive. His process is deeply physical, involving movements that range from quiet, incremental shifts to sweeping, full-bodied gestures. Pigments are pushed, poured, erased, and reintroduced, creating surfaces that echo cycles of emergence and disappearance. Through this interplay of intention and improvisation, Palmer seeks to evoke emotional resonance—an invitation for viewers to enter a contemplative space shaped as much by their own perception as by the artist’s hand.
