About The Artwork

This series of work talk about change. Each vase contains an identity and ideas built over the time. In the same way as each one of us it builds a story of oneself, a story of one’s own life. Every time there is a transformation or a change we let go or left behind a part of ourselves. That transformation can be experienced in different ways: with a full openness to change, with a sense of hope , with straightforwardness, with difficulty or fear. In any case, being aware of our own transformation, that acknowledgement of the decision to change, gives us a glimpse into an intangible kind of beauty, that one that holds freedom, uncertainty and ownership of oneself.

Paola Gracida was born in 1979 in Mexico City, she studied Industrial design in Mexico city and made in Master in Fine Arts in Sweden. She currently lives and works in Saint Joseph, Michigan, USA. Her work explores the idea of adaptability and how we exist under continual change. It aims to express a transitory nature by using shapes that are in a fragile balance, an interior or core. Each work is a quest to defy the force of gravity, shapes that are challenging to build in clay. Focused on how the material changes throughout the process imagining how they will overcome these stages against gravity without breaking. Her practice is based on creating pieces with an essence that can be redefined by others, that convey contrast and openness to understand how it would be possible to modify cultural references and show we transcend stereotypes to become only human.
