Sculpture: Wood on Stainless Steel.
This series consists of wood carving abstractions that are wall mounted. I was interested in reconstituting felled wood. I considered the wood when I began working as an organic substance that had been modified, stripped of its naturally occurring condition in terms of shape, texture, and even life-therefore being rendered inorganic. My intention, if only as an approximation, was to return the material to something of an organic form, through carving, staining and finishing. This particular wood, conceptually becomes formally or even rhetorically organic.
The piece is made of yellow pine. It is approximately 2’ x 6’ x 1 3/4" depth from wall.
Please feel free to copy and paste the below url to see many more photos of the sculpture on my website:
I have developed a unique system of floating the piece away from the wall on several, low-profile, points of articulation using stainless steel standoff barrels which I find develop an extremely interesting contrast with the natural undulations of the wood (please email me if you want more information about this, pictures of the stand off system, etc).
I have mounted many of these sculptures using the standoff barrels and it is really not difficult. I will include instructions on how to mount and all of the hardware for that purpose. If you are in Chicago I will mount for you! I find the floating technique brings an added quality of depth to the piece, imparting dramatic cascading shadows to wall behind the piece which adds additional visual complexity and three dimensionality to the piece.
When conceptualizing the piece, at least aesthetically, I hoped to strike an elegant tension between modern and natural aesthetics. The wood is carved in an intensive process, then sanded, stained and finished with around 12 layers of oil. In addition to a beautiful luster, the layers of oil impart a great strength and structural integrity to the piece. I would describe the finish as mid way between matte and gloss.
My works are made to order and typically take 6-12 weeks to fabricate. I am very open to special orders and working with you. I typically use multiple types of wood and am open to collaborating with you with any species.
I ship domestically and internationally. Please inquire for quotes.
I estimate shipping as closely as possible for all commissioned pieces. Any fees above and beyond the estimated costs will be invoiced through paypal and only in cases when shipping costs are still significantly higher than what I estimated.
I am also open to Payment Plans for this or any piece. Please inquire as to specifics.
