This piece was inspired from wanting to explore how I could play with the layering technique that I have been using for many of my pieces. I also wanted to explore my thoughts a feelings surrounding my journey around chronic depression, and self evaluation. Each layer has been hand cut using a surgical blade, and bounded together with acid-free glue. I created hidden layers to create an affect, so that visual layers appear to be floating.

I hand cut the designs, and as I carefully cut each piece away using a surgical blade, I find it fascinating how this technique exposes the design. There’s something very pure about turning the paper over and seeing the piece slowly reveal itself. My work is driven from my fascination of geometry, and how the environment encapsulates all of this through nature or urban structures. I have learnt the importance of how the negative and positive space interacts with each other. I also enjoy exploring the different measurement rules to create my designs. By building layers in three-dimension, it gives the paper an illusion of depth and movement. I have recently explored doing some commissioned work, which has widened my practice through new perspectives and skills. I love this medium, due to the opportunity for continued growth.
