ABOUT THE ARTWORK
To me, waste is just a lack of imagination. This belief carries beyond the boundaries of my art production and permeates most aspects of my life. Every obsolete object I encounter presents possibilities for my art; from old circuit boards to my father’s shoe, to broken chainsaws and old ice skates, all materials present a possibility to resolve an idea and the hope to make the disposed object better. This woodpecker seemed like a logical choice (bird) to make out of a chainsaw! The chainsaw is a rural Canadian icon whose allegory is to remove nature and culture but in this case I hope to reverse that by recreating nature in this case a woodpecker as well as rescuing the saw from landfill!

Peter McFarlane is an award winning artist, based on Salt Spring Island, whose work is in public and private collections nationally and internationally. What connects all of his work is the re-contextualizing of obsolete everyday objects to create personal philosophies which he hopes will resonate with the viewer on a visceral and/or intellectual level and open up the possibility of a new conceptual experience.
