ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The artwork is a mosaic made of shaped glazed terracotta tiles on a wooden support. The colors are very intensive and bright. It is freely inspired by the time when Pisa was a maritime republic in the thirteenth century. The work is imaginative invention: it takes inspiration from ancient images and rework them in an atmosphere of a fantastic story, with the representation of the city enclosed in a shell of turreted walls, of fabulous ships sailing on a rough sea. The Meloria tower is represented in the sea, which stood on a small islet (the Meloria rock) in the Tyrrhenian sea which gave its name to the battle of the same name, fought between the maritime republics of Pisa and Genoa on 6 August 1284 in which Pisa suffered a serious defeat.

Always passionated about figurative art, Nicoletta De Francesco began her career as a ceramic artist in the mid-1990s. Her artworks are mosaics made of terracotta shaped tiles glazed in bright colors, depicting images freely inspired by medieval iconography. Nicoletta De Francesco’s technique consists in sketching an initial paper scheme, then used to decompose a sheet of clay into different shaped tiles, which are subsequently fired in the ceramic kiln and then glazed and fired a second time. The mosaic is then reassembled on a wooden support. The artist's production also includes tiles and pendants also in ceramics. The artworks of Nicoletta De Francesco are permanently exposed in her Atelier: Studio d’arte Barbuti – De Francesco, Via dei Mille 22 Pisa, Italy. The site of the studio is: .
