My father is from Florence and I wanted to create a piece that would reflect my heritage. All of my pieces are inspired by nature, colour and form, and these swallows remind me of my summers spent in Italy throughout my childhood. Every year the same swallows would return to roost on our terrace, and because they are known to return home every year and choose a mate for life, the swallow often is a symbol for love and loyalty to the family. This striking and intricate 3D paper scultpure is made using Japanese chiyogami and unryu papers. Each bird is carefully hand cut and selected, and placed at differing heights, as well as stuck to the glass, infusing this collage with movement, depth and life. The artwork is signed by the artist and framed in a lime washed and waxed tulip wood frame.

I am an artist specialising in hand cut and painted paper artworks. Drawing inspiration from nature, colour and form, I cut and draw each component by hand, creating joyful artworks that are individual, imaginative and full of movement. My precision and attention to the detail of each component guarantees that every work is unique. I love working with paper as it allows me to be absolutely precise with my incisions, and as my intent is to create movement not only in the subject matter but also within the medium, paper lends itself wonderfully to manipulation so that the birds or the butterflies literally take flight. I use predominantly Japanese chiyogami papers for their vibrant colours and luminescence, as well as Italian fine papers to reflect my heritage.
