This piece is based on the Roman myth of Proserpina, the Goddess of Spring who lives for six months in the Underworld before returning to our world to bring the flowers and trees back to life. I want to give a sense of sadness and longing in this work, even desperation as she squeezes the honey from the comb. I am drawn to mythology, but also wanted to express a modern idea by tattooing her body and bringing her into the current Age.

Bradley Cahill is a sculptor from Dayton, Ohio who resides in Northern Illinois with his wife and three daughters. He earned a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Wright State University and worked as an art handler and installer at the Dayton Art Institute and the Dayton Visual Arts Center. After relocating, he worked as an art handler and installer for Northern Illinois University Art Museum while continuing his pursuit of sculpture. He established CultSculpture in 2014 to consolidate his creative and functional works and is associated with the Illinois visual arts group Paper Bone Collective. Artist Statement The focus of my work is the exploration of personal mythology as it is influenced by ancient legend and contemporary lore. I am moved by heavy objects of reverence and began carving stone in 2002 to try to understand this archaic art form. There is a certain authority to working with stone that I find intriguing- a decisiveness and a directness in translating idea to object in durable materials. We are temporary creatures and carving stone is an act of faith in an unknown future where stone sculptures survive as messages to an unborn generation.
