About The Artwork

A "quoin" (pronounced "coin") is an exterior angle of a wall, typically a piece of masonry, of a size or decoration in order to make it stand out from adjoining walls. This is one piece in a series of work about walls and their use in society to separate and contain people. I started this work with a large scale piece made while I was the International Sculpture Center's artist in residence at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City, NJ. This is the first of the Quoin series, the original. These works are an investigation into how the United States went from being the nation that called on others to tear down walls, to the nation that builds walls.

Dominic is best known for his room-filling installations and repetitive cast objects that combine to create an industrial mass-produced sensibility to his sculpture. His current body of work is a critical response to the disproportionate role of the Military Industrial Complex in society. His practice has been heavily influenced by time spent in the aerospace industry where he was responsible for producing fabrication and assembly drawings for satellites, military aircraft, and mobile artillery units. He is a native of Chicago Illinois and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign and a Master of Fine Arts from the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. Dominic has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions across the United States.
