About The Artwork

Inspired by the passing of a Syrian hamster named Pippa, the sculpture is a life size detailed rendering of her bust. The eyes are painted with a super black pigment and coated with a heat sensitive varnish, changing color upon touch. The horse hair used for the whiskers is ethically sourced.

The prevailing theme in the work of multidisciplinary visual artist Katrīna Tračuma is humankind’s estrangement from nature, as viewed through the lens of our relationships with other species. An innate tendency of humans to anthropomorphize fellow animals and the psychology behind that tendency also informs the work. This dysfunctional kinship is explored through different materials and mediums, with a primary focus on painting. Using bright pigments and striking colour combinations to draw attention to this matter in an engaging way, bold brushstrokes are balanced with intricate details in a language of symbolic imagery and metaphors.
