About The Artwork

A lovely pot with a terrific range of metallic covers and textures including a fabulous blue on the inside. There are classic metallic colours expected with raku as well as matt and a black 'soot' spot arising from the the positioning in the kiln. It's a fabulous ornament. The height maximum is 95mm/3.75" and the base is 60mm/2.25". At the top opening it has a diameter of 35mm/1.5". The pot was rapidly heated up to 960°C, then placed in a barrel filled with combustible material, covered with wood shavings, and allowed to smoke. The amount of oxygen that is allowed during the firing and cooling process affects the resulting colour of the glaze and the amount of crackle. Generally my practice is to starve oxygen by placing a lid on the barrel after 1-3 minutes. The process is unpredictable in this instance it resulted in an interesting metallic gun metal colour and the flashes effect shown in the images. What is Raku? Raku firing is a traditional Japanese pottery technique known for its unpredictability and unique results. It is often characterized by its crackled glaze and vibrant colors, making it a sought-after art form for many collectors and enthusiasts. A piece such as this can take anything up to 6+ hours to make from start to finish. It began as a thick walled pinch pot that was shaped and the carved.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I have been a ceramicist for more than 30 years. 99% of my work is made using coils, slabs and pinch pots with the occasional use of extruded forms and aslip casting. The emphasis of my work is scupltural and ornamental rather than utlitarian. I have a particular interest in the fusing and melding of glass to ceramics and this body of work is collected from as far afield as the Middle East and USA.
