Raku firing is a more intensive approach and requires heightened attention and physical connection to each minute and step of the vessels’ finishing process. It feels and looks like a ritualistic dance with fire and smoke to conjure the lustrous and smoky finish. First all the vessels are fired in an oxidation kiln to bisque in preparation for the raku kiln. They are then bathed in layers of metal rich low fire glazes. The vessels are next placed into a gas kiln outdoors and fired to a peak temperature of about 1800 degrees. When the glaze is molten hot and glowing red, the vases are then cherry picked with iron forging tongs, and transported into a reduction chamber. The chamber is filled with locally foraged dried leaves, sticks, pine needles and grasses. This organic matter ignites into flames and the smoke envelopes the hot vessel. The chamber is then sealed to suffocate the environment of oxygen. Oxygen is then pulled from the glaze and clay bodies to reveal vibrant color and metallic lusters. The finished pieces are subjected to thermal shock and can get damaged in this volatile process. The glazed surface reveals thermal shock cracks where the smoke has penetrated leaving marks. The smokey cracks are striking markings, similar to scars or tattoos. Evidence of nature’s duality, the balance of fragility and strength, the vitality of survival that is embedded into my body of work.
