Retrofuture City is a site-specific installation I did at Root Division in San Francisco. It's in a group show called " Through That Which Is Seen" (June 6 to June 23, 2012 curated by Alexis Arnold and Lauren Hartman. Retrofuture City is a diorama of an imaginative world where landscape and cityscape blend into each other in an atmosphere of balance and harmony. The pictorial structure and cheerful colors borrow from Buddhism, Taoism, traditional Chinese paintings and Asian architecture. The setting is based on the traditional Chinese garden which provides a panoramic view of space, a sense of timelessness, and uncovers the hidden relationship between human and cosmos. The main material used in this piece is cardboard from packages shipped to me. Exploring, discovering and re-purposing daily objects, turning trash into art is the way I give respect to the materials, uncovering the hidden fun in daily life and suggesting a flaw in modern consumer culture.
