Much of my work focuses on the fruiting body of fungi but here I wanted to go beneath the soil and explore the mycelium that connects them. Mycelium is key to healthy soil and the passing of nutrients. Hand carved from a slab of natural alabaster. I like to use texture in my work to play with light and shadow. Here the chisel marks are left on the stone whilst the mycelium itself has been polished to encourage its translucence. This piece is free standing and would work best on a large windowsill where it can benefit from the light passing through which will change the feel of the sculpture throughout the day. Alabaster can not be displayed outdoors as it reacts with rain water.

Contemporary stone sculpture for the home and garden inspired by nature and the grown world. Ben Russell is a stone sculptor based in West Dorset, UK. He works in a variety of stones including limestone local to the UK and alabaster, marble and onyx from around the world. 'When producing my work I use a mixture of the traditional skills learnt from my time in the heritage industry whilst employing a fairly spontaneous direct carving approach. Having fallen for the charms of stone I take inspiration from the grown world within the landscape and habitats that surround me in the rolling hills of West Dorset. I am fascinated by the interaction of seemingly soft and flowing organic forms within a hard natural material and strive to capture something of the way in which I saw the grown environment as a child. I encourage the viewer to question our place on the planet and evoke a realisation that we must respect nature in order to survive as a species. It feels ever more important to me to reconnect with the forms that enthralled me growing up. By creating these sculptures I feel closer to nature and myself and hope to awaken this feeling in others'
