Ruby Glass with Monkey Pod Wood Sculpture by Scott Slagerman Sculpture

The question that I asked myself was how I could combine and Interlock glass and wood in a new and different way. I was Inspired by Japenese Joinery in Architecture and how they can connect beams by cutting notches in the wood which creates a perfect fit and has no need for any other means to secure the two parts. I began drawing interlocking forms for both the glass and the wood and soon realized the potential of being able to hand blow glass directly into the shapes. The process of blowing the glass created a secondary effect of a hollow glass component which added a functional aspect to the sculpture.
