I’m fascinated by the duality in one object, and how it can convey more than one meaning. With these porcelain bowls, apart from the craftsmanship that has gone into their colourful floral designs, they are used to serve delightful cuisine in fancy, expensive restaurants bustling with activity. Kos is a Sri Lankan artist based in Hong Kong whose work explores the fluid nature of human existence through figurative abstraction. Anchored by recognizable silhouettes, his paintings unfold into layered, symbolic worlds shaped by rhythm, movement, and the influence of the sea. Time spent sailing and restoring his sailboat informs the undulating lines and shifting surfaces within his compositions. Working in oil on canvas, Kos balances representation and abstraction, using iridescent, bubble-like color transitions to reflect fragility, transformation, and the cyclical nature of life. Originally influenced by the bold visual language of 1990s Sri Lankan billboard painting, his practice merges visual intensity with contemplative depth. Kos has exhibited internationally in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. He was a finalist for the 2018 Royal Art Prize and selected for Saatchi Art’s inaugural NFT drop, The Other Avatars (2022). His work is held in institutional and private collections worldwide.
