Here, the basalt column forms the framework for a very lively form of stone working. By creating the concave fields in a wide variety of rhythms and proportions and polishing out the dark mineral parts, the sculptures are strongly related to their surroundings due to their reflective abilities and permanently change their character with different lighting conditions. The concaves are grounded by a mesh and thus firmly connected to the surrounding base rock.

"Basalt...columns, spheres, plates, bombs, gray, brown, black, ocher, rugged and soft. I love these frozen forms that tell stories of eruptive power and the cool core that can be peeled out of them." (Christoph Jakob) The transformation of the original stone shape to the final sculptural appearance reveals Jacob's artistic energy and creativity. Nothing can be seen of the difficult work process when the sculpture rests on its pedestal, as the artist always knows how to maintain a harmonious balance between his creative interventions and the stone's own dynamic.
