In my artwork inspired by the apocalyptic fiction I wrote, I explore tactile desire and visual pleasure through visual art. Creating an apocalyptic world, I focused on the intersections of culture, religion, and identity and how people navigate the challenges of a hopeless world. I felt when things don't work out, I often wish that the Earth would be destroyed, and everything would be gone. People often choose to remain in the past when the reality is hell and when they feel that there is no longer a bright future. I always feel a sense of defeat and dream of an apocalyptic future where I have the items necessary to survive, but the rest of humanity has to start a new life from nothing. Because of this experience, I wrote fiction to create an apocalyptic world. After that, I began to materialize this world, calling myself a digital shaman and creating 2D and 3D works. Digital shaman is a medium that delivers past knowledge to the new world. My creation represents the past and the future reflecting different cultures, religions, and mythology and expresses the frustration of reality and a tiny drop of hope. In sculptures, I aim to create and release haptic desire through the use of tactile and visually appealing materials that encourage viewers to reflect on their own experiences of touch. My creations combine low technology with high technology and natural objects with man-made objects. By juxtaposing digital and non-digital images and adding lots of details, I aim to create pieces that engage the viewer on multiple levels and invite them to experience visual pleasure and unique experiences that arouse a heightened sense of materiality that can only be experienced in the real.

Jin-Yong Choi is a New York-based artist born in South Korea. Choi received his BFA at Kookmin University in Seoul, South Korea and MFA at Pratt Institute in New York. Based on his apocalyptic narratives, he explores and experiments with tactile desires and a sense of materiality in sculptural forms and installation. By creating objects with intriguing materials, combining digital and non-digital images, and adding lots of details to them, he wants to create a unique experience that arouses haptic desires and visual pleasure that can only be experienced in the real. Recently, he has been working on a project called Digital Shaman and creating shamanic objects. Digital shaman is a medium that delivers past knowledge to the new world. He believes people in the apocalyptic world will treat his multicultural creations as relics that are simultaneously primitive and advanced. Choi’s artwork has been shown in galleries and museums in South Korea and the U.S., including Seoul Museum of Art in Seoul, Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL) in NY, Shin Gallery in NY, Williamsburg Art & Historical Center in NY, A.I.R Gallery in NY, Wassaic Project in NY. He has participated in the Artist Residency Program at Trestle Art Space in NY, Sculpture Space in Utica and ChaNorth in Pine Plains, BRIC Bridge Space, NY, and LMCC Art Center in NY. Also, He earned the Stutzman Foundation Fellowships and won the Gold Prize from AHL – T&W Foundation Contemporary Visual Art Awards.
