With a career spanning over five decades, Lucius Upshaw is a distinguished American sculptor known for his versatility and mastery of form. Born into a family of artists, Upshaw’s creative journey began early, evolving into a lifelong pursuit of lasting beauty through material. Classically trained at Humboldt State University under the mentorship of internationally renowned sculptor Melvin Schuler, Upshaw spent decades mastering the direct carved method in wood and stone. Today, his practice has expanded to include metal fabrication, large-scale copper reliefs, and lost-wax bronze casting. Upshaw’s work is defined by its smooth, contemporary lines and expressive energy. Whether capturing the fluid grace of Indigenous dancers, the raw power of wildlife, or the spiritual weight of angelic figures, his sculptures balance strength with a distinct sense of serenity. He is particularly noted for his exclusive limited editions (often 30 or fewer), ensuring that each bronze retains high collectible value. His large-scale commissions include the "Spiraling River" copper fountain for the City of Redding and the "Window to the River" relief at the Sequoia Park Zoo. Upshaw’s work is held in private and corporate collections across the United States and represented by galleries in Arizona and Oregon.
