ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work stems from the inspiration that befell me after reading the novel written by Bruce Chatwin which provides a fascinating background to indigenous Australian life. The songlines are the invisible pathways that criss-cross Australia, tracks connecting communities and following ancient boundaries. Along these lines, Aboriginals passed the songs which revealed the creation of the land and the secrets of its past. In this magical account, Chatwin recalls his travels across the length and breadth of Australia seeking to find the truth about the songs and unravel the mysteries of their stories. I've used intricate free weaving medium to express the richness of aboriginal culture.

I’m a visual artist and lecturer on Environmental Art. In my work I’m currently exploring the aesthetics of organic fibre and refuse synthetic fibre. Conducting workshops and lectures on Art and Environment to environmental science students I was naturally led to consider 'junk' materials as something to celebrate and to showcase these for their inherent virtues beyond mere usefulness. I hope to share with the viewer the beauty of bonding with materials we tend to disregard and foster an organic aesthetic. I’m fascinated by the juxtaposition of junk synthetic produce bags with sisal wrapping string. By this I’m marvelled at how a parallel ecology comes to the foreground. Recycling junk for the mere sake of recycling is not enough. I strongly feel that praising matter for its own sake is more fulfilling, and art is the best way of looking at discarded materials as a resource for creation. In considering environmental issues it's important to me to reconnect to our surroundings: the material world is the springboard of evolution, where I can enact the attempt to “love matter as myself”. As I shape matter, I myself am being shaped. The style is abstract and yet tactile. I like the materiality of humble materials.
