ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My actual work using discarded wrappings, those humble materials, is an attempt to blur out the boundaries of categories which fragment the perception of the visual field and allow this inner beauty to emerge, devoid of all labels. The choreography of the materials unfolds of its own: the organic fibres, by their virile texture, support the vulnerability of the synthetic materials, malleable and non-degradable. Also, the sisal and coco string, by their natural and neutral coloration, bring out the already saturated colours of the synthetic fibres. Then comes the white plastic bubble paper, its translucent pearly aspect confers the work its luminosity in an otherwise opaque field. In this space emptied out of all projections, they cheerfully cross the threshold of materials to be recycled and become resources to compose with and celebrate. Thus, as I work with them I don’t feel as though I’m weaving nor telling a story, but rather, sculpting by following the movement intimated by the materials themselves and allow the flowering of the beauty inherent in the way I see them and that, I should wish, the viewers will see them.

I’m a visual artist and lecturer on Environmental Art. In my work I’m currently exploring the aesthetics of organic fibre and refuse synthetic fibre. Conducting workshops and lectures on Art and Environment to environmental science students I was naturally led to consider 'junk' materials as something to celebrate and to showcase these for their inherent virtues beyond mere usefulness. I hope to share with the viewer the beauty of bonding with materials we tend to disregard and foster an organic aesthetic. I’m fascinated by the juxtaposition of junk synthetic produce bags with sisal wrapping string. By this I’m marvelled at how a parallel ecology comes to the foreground. Recycling junk for the mere sake of recycling is not enough. I strongly feel that praising matter for its own sake is more fulfilling, and art is the best way of looking at discarded materials as a resource for creation. In considering environmental issues it's important to me to reconnect to our surroundings: the material world is the springboard of evolution, where I can enact the attempt to “love matter as myself”. As I shape matter, I myself am being shaped. The style is abstract and yet tactile. I like the materiality of humble materials.
