I am always like to take inspiration from travelling and through cultural experiences, often using my own photography to inspire my artwork. A year ago I travelled to Porto in Portugal to explore and immerse myself in a different culture. I spent a few days in the city and I decided to walk for an hour or two until I reached the Atlantic Ocean. I spent a good few hours watched the weather go through mixed emotions or stormy to quiet serene, but it was at sunset when it saw it's true glory as the sun danced it's way over the rippling waves and cast a beautiful reflection across the waterlogged beach as the waves crashed in. There truly is nothing more relaxing than listening to and watching the sun go down over the waves. I knew in that moment when I took this picture that I wanted to try to recreate how I felt in my own distinctive style. I love working with string but it does have some limitations that I always try to push myself to overcome with each piece. It was very hard to make the sea look quite organic without it looking quite geometric, as often can be the case when working with string and nails, but I really think I achieved my best. My artwork always takes on a second life when you actually see it in person and you can see the passion and love I build into my work with each layer I add, and each strand I place is so carefully thought out.

Taking inspiration from my own personal admirations and travels, I aim to create a rich tapestry of feelings and wonder both within the artwork and your mind. Each piece of subtly modelled art work is seen as a device for progression, to test and explore the dimensions of the materials I am working with, using locally sourced and reclaimed wood as a raw natural canvas. I enjoy developing a sense of depth through careful toning and layering to ensure that your eye will notice different details as you move around a room, creating your own aesthetic narrative.
