ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The Reader was inspired by friends who become so engrossed when reading that they seem to become 'as one' with the book. I hope that viewers will identify this - whether in themselves or friends/family. I work from clay for the original because of it enables a slow meditative process, which felt in keeping with this piece. Like my other works, I pared back on details to reveal the emotion/energy more clearly - in this case: absorption, intent, concentration. Cold Cast Bronze: Bookshelf edition 13cm high. Two would make great bookends.

Maxine Farmer (RBA 2024 Exhibitor) - Maxine’s passion for sculpture stems from a fascination with capturing energy, emotion and fleeting ephemeral moments as permanent 3D memories. Most of her work is figurative, but she also loves sculpting animals and scenes from nature (especially tree-scapes). Maxine creates her original sculptures in clay, plaster, or mixed media, and many are then turned into cold-cast bronzes. She has also been building a portfolio of bas relief (2D wall sculpture) and continues to experiment with new materials for her 3D work.
