Tangle with Rattlesnake Sculpture

These tangles came about after several long years of trying to envision what a tabletop landscape might look like. When I moved to the New Mexico the arroyos were filled with clumps of these tangled branches, leftover from past droughts and dead junipers and pinons. I called them tangles. They were originally intended to be paintings, then I had an “ah HA” moment and realized they were perfect for the tabletop landscapes! These tabletop sculptures are meant to draw in the audience, let them ramble around and explore within the rocks and branches, and thus discover the animals and insects and interesting bits of branches and real and fake rocks inhabiting each of the pieces. I chose Papier Mache, first as a departure from painting, and secondly because I can create these sculptures in my studio, without a kiln, making them much more manageable to do. They are then painted with acrylics, and either drawn on with pen and ink, or the drawing is engraved with my micro engraver. They take a lot of time to create, but each tells a story, and each is a labor of love.
