This work is based on an ancient Buddhist figure. Although having been brought up in the so called first world I relate more to the religions of the East and therefore find images of this group of art inspiring to the point that I respond creatively. As I undoubtedly enjoy my relationship with the Earth my first choice of medium with which to build my sculpture is clay. While still responding to these ancient artworks my work does have a truly modern feel and I really hope the viewer is drawn to the same peace that images of Eastern Art generate within me.

South Africa
Many years ago way back in my youth I was introduced to three dimensional form while working as a display artist. Given the job of carving clouds from a block of polystyrene I nervously cut away one small piece after another and at that moment I felt a welling up of excitement and immediately new that sculpture was to be my forte. Some years later I discovered clay and loved its plasticity. I enjoy working with the human form and spend many hours observing people, the way they move and look. Different expressions on their faces fascinate me so observing them I record this sometimes mentally and other-times by sketching. I work with incomplete sculptured bodies allowing the viewers imagination to fill in the missing pieces I was born in Birmingham England in 1943. My family emmigrated to South Africa in 1948. I was fortunate to have developed my creative abilities from an early age under the guidance of my father who was a lecturer at the London Academy of Arts and Crafts.
