The Story Of “The Heart of the Wood” Have you ever believed a decision in your life was out of your control? Have you ever been driven to complete a project or pursue an interest with such passion that you felt possessed? I have experienced that a few times in my life and when that wave of feeling washes over me it can feel as if I have very little agency in controlling my impulses. This project felt like that. I found “The Heart of the Wood” while I was on a hike in a wooded area near where I live. The sun was coming through the trees and a light fog hung low over the trail. It was magical and I was quickly lost in my thoughts. I lost track of how long I had hiked and was crossing through an area that had been scarred by a wildfire the year before. It had rained hard in the weeks before my hike and parts of the trail were washed out. It was as I was trying to find a way to navigate around one such part that I saw a series of roots jutting out of the ground; exposed by erosion. The sun seemed to come be coming though the canopy overhead and highlighted the roots as if to say, “look here”. I stopped moving for a moment and took in my surroundings. It was as good a time as any to catch my breath. Then I saw it, an exposed root that looked in that moment exactly like a heart. It was decayed and, in the morning, light looked for a moment as if it was beating. A trick of the light I realized quickly. I walked up to inspect it closer and subtle shift in my posture and positioning seemed to transform it again. It now looked like a curled-up infant. Not an infant in the traditional sense. It seemed alien; like something that wasn’t of this world. I dislodged the root and decided that I wanted to take it with me, to preserve it some way and make sure that it can’t be destroyed.
