Hello and welcome to my Saatchi Art profile. About me: I currently live in the picturesque North East of England within reach of the sprawling North Yorkshire Moors and the beautiful East Coast. My earliest creative memory is sitting watching my Father draw and paint wildlife and landscapes and thinking "I want to do that". He would patiently sit and teach me everything from how to hold a pencil, to perspective, to the effects of light and shadow, but most of all to never give up. Since those faint memories I have exhibited up and down the country as well as co-run a successful gallery. Unfortunately that came to an end in 2010 due to circumstances out of my control. But, just as my Dad taught me all those years ago, here I am, doing what I love. Education: I'm self-taught and have been painting for over 20yrs. Some people judge 'self-taught' as been a disadvantage when being an artist yet I see it as a strength as I have followed the same paths of frustration, learning curves and mistakes, just as an academic would. The only difference is it's taken my slightly longer. I've also spent many years gaining knowledge about the history of art and taken inspiration from the many artists I've read about and met along the way. About my work: My most recent direction is sculpting, with my latest work based on the juxtaposition of fragility and strength within the human spirit. The human spirit may not be a tangible part of us but it is certainly something that can be broken yet within the core of that spirit is a quality that can be used to make you stronger and fitter. The visual fragility of the towering forms resembles the outer physical weakness of the human body whereas the solidness of the works is a reflection of the strength of the human mind. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.
