The Looking Glass Sculpture

"The Looking Glass", is part of the North-40 series, inspired by my life and experience residing in rural Northern Wisconsin, near Lake Superior. I consider these figurative sculptures to be expressive narratives. I am fascinated by combining natural and found objects with a backdrop of the human form. This sculpture features a large glass element in her chest. Her eyes are covered, unneeded to see what is of true value. The looking glass in her chest represents emotion, deep feeling and love. Many of the materials incorporated into my work were found on the shores of Lake Superior, like beach glass & wave washed stones, driftwood, taconite, birchbark from dead-fall trees, abandoned birds nest and more. I have a background in hot glass, so I will also often add blown, fused & pulled glass elements into my sculptures. This series was created by hand-building stoneware clay and bisque firing it to cone 04 (about 1945-1950 degrees) for a period of about 8-12 hours then letting it cool for another 12 hours. Each part is carefully hand-glazed (painted with powdered suspended glass) and re-fired in a kiln to cone 6 (about 2232 -2269 degrees) for about 12 hours, then slow cooled for 12-18 more hours. The work in inspected and re-fired as needed to achieve the look I am satisfied with. The turn-table and stand are not included. These sculptures have a felt or cork pad attached to the base to protect surfaces. They are made (mostly) hollow, where possible, to save on shipping charges due to weight.
