Art Description

Sculpture: Fabric, Metal, Textile on Soft (Yarn, Cotton, Fabric), Other.

The work was created as a result of a residency in which research re: History of the African American Community that lived in Maryland in the 1800s. The costumes of the period and the escape from their slave masters. The shroud title is appropriate for the work as some of the slaves had to escape and go in disguise. The history of the past is important as some people are not interested or familiar with it. My work is predominantly textiles using embroidery as the form of expression. A discipline that has not been recognized as a form of art for a long time but is slowly beginning to gain the respect it deserves. My work is social justice and hence the research and subject matter.
