This is the combination of both Art and Science. These keen observations of the motion and energy of a horse running has been captured into a 3-dimensional sculpture. The piece came to be from Kamish’s experimenting on how to make a motionless sculpture come to life! Kamish studied the work of Edward James Muggeridge; 9 April 1830 – 8 May 1904, the English photographer known for his pioneering work in photographic studies of motion, and early work in motion-picture projection. Galloping horse The Horse in Motion by Edward James Muggeridge. "Sallie Gardner," owned by Leland Stanford; running at a 1:40 gait over the Palo Alto track, 19th June 1878. Frames 1-11 used for animation, frame 12 not used. Kamish used a similar film of a horse running and found that he could combine the 12 repeating frames of a horse gallop into 6 unique sculptures set into a four foot high relief. The merging of Art & Science. All this information was then taken by Kamish who skillfully sculpted this piece so that it would come to life; thus resulting in a perfect gallop of a horse running. Another small tidbit on the colors chosen for the jockeys. Using the typical bright colors of the modern jockey, Kamish artistically painted these jockey’s using the same scheme of a color prism, thus being very attractive to the eye. These are the same colors your eye sees as light radiates through a perfect diamond. If you are a race horse fan and aficionado of fine Horse Racing Art than look no further. Artist's Statement I work with clay and other sculpting media to create relief sculptures. My relief sculpture is an architectural stage where fanciful characters act out my stories. At first glance, the stories are common life experiences, but as you look closer, subtleties start to emerge. Relief allows real space to juxtapose with illusionary space, disorienting the viewer's senses and lures them into my satiric view of the world. Melding color and sculpture is exciting! Light falls upon the piece, casting natural shadows and illuminating high points. Adding paint-directed shade and glow further enhances the illusion of depth, pulling the viewer into the pieces. After choosing one or more light sources, I begin sculpting with paint, applying thin layers of cool shadow colors against warm highlight colors. This process goes back and forth until I achieve a certain vibration in the piece. My art is whimsical and playful storytelling. I want the viewer to enjoy all that's going on in the piece, but not in one sitting. I want them to keep coming back for more. Paul Kamish
